Sometimes, comments on the Front Page aren’t bad, but they add nothing to the discussion at all and consist of shitty speculation, like this one:

But bad stars are negativity and negativity means unhappiness and unhappiness is less clicks which is less money. It’s why Facebook doesn’t have a thumbs down and actively takes down web tools that track people who unfriend you.

This is why I like reddit

Do they really take down web tools just for that?
Here on Kinja I don’t see how that would lead to less money. When the shitty comments are downvoted it helps enhance the experience. When I see a really downvoted comment on Reddit, I’m more tempted to read it.

I remember one time I made a comment complaining about journalists excessively bitching about interiors on entry level compact cars. I said something along the lines of “I’m gonna go crazy if I read another review complain about the lack of soft touch materials in a Nissan Versa.”
Some commented after that.
“You’ll wish it had soft touch materials if you ever roll over though.” Except he was more of an asshole about saying it. I just left him in the greys so he wouldn’t get embarrassed by other commentators.
True story.

That’s a scorching hot taek.

The most you can do is “dismiss” someone, but only if their comment is a reply to yours (or you’re the article author.)

-1 star

Now that the grays aren’t such a huge deal, any cruddy commenter who got followed by the Gawker blogs has a voice. Which includes me, but I rarely comment unless I have something to say that can make the discussion improve.

True. But I believe the dismiss feature exists to really eliminate the worst comments. Not comments that simply happen to be crappy.

It’s a well known fact that companies live and die by the money they spend in the themed model name department.
Also negatives stars are called “smartass comments”

Kinja’s “recommendations” are also precisely why Reddit’s system sucks too lol. The upvote/downvote system encourages enforcing the echo chamber.
I didn’t last long at r/Cars at all before I just said “fudge it” and went somewhere else. For “car enthusiasts”, they’re just as fake as FP commenters are. lol

I’d do it for free man.

Yeah, the whole “pending approval” thing can be really handy. (But sometimes it can take a lot of restraint to avoid responding to a deservedly grey reply.)
![]() 01/29/2017 at 14:48 |

Or just reply and suggest to them that they are full of crap.

On Gizmodo it would devolve into a war of Trump haters vs. people sick and tired of seeing anti-trump posts on articles having nothing to do with politics. It would be brutal.
![]() 01/29/2017 at 14:49 |

Yes. And not to dismiss replies that happen to disagree with you.
Better is to post a reply with a thoughtful rationale as to why the original comment was misinformed or absurd.

I prefer comedy, less likely for flames of rage or more funny if/when it does

Moral of the story: people are dicksacks.

I stay away from the big subreddits, but I think a private Oppo sub would do well.

(I don’t spend a lot of time on Reddit, so correct me if I’m wrong, but) it looks like their points system doesn’t actually show positive vs negative stats the way that YouTube does. I prefer being able to see how many “dislikes” are countering the “likes”.
![]() 01/29/2017 at 15:00 |

Yeah it doesn’t show total up and down votes, it just shows what the current score is.

“Show more replies”
You click that button, you’ll never make it to the bottom on scrolling alone.

That’s a shame. Were Kinja to adopt a “negative star”, I wouldn’t want to take away someone’s upvote with my own opinion. Especially on subjective matters like whether a car is ugly or not.

I comment all the time because I have nothing better to do.

@Hammerhead Fistpunch
“I prefer comedy, less likely for flames of rage or more funny if/when it does”
True that.
It’s a demontrated fact that the people who could most benefit from a sense of humor, also are always the people with the least sense of humor lol

The worst comments are the ones whining about politics on Jalopnik/Gizmodo/FA.
Instead of just, ya know,
not reading the article
, you gave them your click and then wasted everyone’s time by whining about it.
![]() 01/29/2017 at 16:59 |

And then you do get to the bottom and it says “show more replies” a second time.
![]() 01/29/2017 at 18:29 |

I remember some subreddits require that downvoting only be used legitimately and not just all willy nilly, a rule that resembles the reason we use ‘dismiss’ on Kinja.
![]() 01/30/2017 at 08:24 |

I hope not. I like it better where if you say something dumb you either suffer in silence or get called on to defend your position.
![]() 01/30/2017 at 13:22 |

People who return to defend their position = total idiots, slight chance it is a troll
People who don’t return = definitely trolls
![]() 01/30/2017 at 13:27 |

OK, defend their position/admit defeat. Whatev. Either way, a call-out comment is better than hiding behind a downvote.
